About me

Who is the Happy Wanderer?

Hello! My name is Pamela Roth and my goal is to inspire people to travel to unique places that are off the beaten path and try new adventures. But first, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

In 2003, I became a journalist after graduating from the journalism program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary. The bulk of my early journalism years was spent covering court and crime for various newspapers in Western Canada, including the Regina Leader-Post and the Edmonton Sun. During my time as a crime reporter in Edmonton, I wrote a true-crime book that profiles some of the city's most notorious unsolved murders. The book, Deadmonton was published in September 2016.

It was in Edmonton that I also dove into the exciting world of travel writing, with my first published article (a 10-page spread about Vietnam's Halong Bay) appearing in Outpost Magazine. I started traveling to more exotic places like Greenland and Rwanda, and couldn't get enough of it. More than 10 years later, I'm still an avid traveller and outdoor enthusiast, but now I live in beautiful Victoria, BC and specialize in freelance photography and travel writing. My stories have appeared in several newspapers and magazines including the Globe and Mail, Toronto Sun, Our Canada, BC Outdoors, the Vancouver Sun and Sidetracked Magazine. Aside from globe trotting, my hobbies and interests include snowboarding, camping, hiking, reading, biking, running and fishing.
